The Tournament
In Trieste, Italy, nine of the world’s best teams will fight, from January 19-24, for one of the four places that will allow them to compete at the Olympic Games in Japan.
So far, eight nations have already won their ticket for the Olympic celebration: Australia, Canada, China, South Africa, Spain, Russia, USA and Japan as host
Historically, Italy has a strong tradition in the first Olympic team sport. Its water polo teams have accomplished brilliant results at an international level and all conditions are met in Trieste to welcome the tournament.
This event of upmost importance has also a special meaning, after an unprecedented year of 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic: it represents the return of Sport to the lives of our athletes, following a forced halt of many months. It is the light at the end of the tunnel we were all hoping for.
The competition follows the usual format of three preliminary round matches, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. However, the main purpose of the tournament is to find the top two, so semifinal day is where the real action happens.
